Minoxidil and Hair Loss

Minoxidil was first introduced as an oral drug to treat high blood pressure. When it was discovered in the 1980’s that minoxidil could also grow hair, Upjohn Corporation produced a topical formula that contained 5% version for men 2% version for women. The formula was given the brand name Rogaine in the United States and Regaine outside of the United States.

The most common side effect that was associated with minoxidil was and itchy scalp syndrome. Some of the other less common side effect included head aches, blurred vision, irregular or fast heart beat, chest pains and acne in the area in which the topical formula was being used. Any of these side effects can also mean that too much of the drug is being used. In 2007 a foam based version of Rogaine was created to help alleviate some of the asscoiated side effects

Minoxidil is also said to be less effective in older men and mostly works in the central vortex area of the scalp in younger men aged 18-41. Minoxidil-stimulated regrowth of terminal hairs is very definitely dose-dependent. In a study at the University of Illinois, using 1% and 5% topical minoxidil solutions, 42% had response to 1% minoxidil and 84% had response to 5% minoxidil. Multiple large series studies have been reported using 2% and 3% topical minoxidil solutions.

Monoxidil continues to sell in all it’s variations. Because of the time that the product has been on the shelves and the marketing campaign behind it, words like Rogaine and minoxidil have become highly synonymous with hair loss treatment options. Many consumers aren’t even aware that there are any other hair loss treatment options in the market place.

Another name that is actually starting to build momentum here in the United States is Revivogen. Created in the late 90’s, Dr. Alex Khadavi was looking for a topical and all natural alternative and to help combat his own hair loss. By creating something that is all natural and topical, the idea was minimize and alleviate any possible side effects. Dr. Khadavi set out to create a formula that combined all of nature’s most potent anti-dht inhibitors that have been scientifically proven to stop hair loss. He wanted a formula that would also have no systematic effects on any other part of the body. Over ten years later, Revivogen is being successfully used to combat hair loss by men and women all around the world.

Whether you decide on a synthetic or an all natural treatment option for your hair loss, the idea is to investigate. Learn about the products origins and track record. Do your homework and read about the products history. Understand if there are any possible side effects especially with synthetic ingredients. Be aware also if you have an underlying condition that could put you at risk by using this particular product. Good luck and remember not doing your research in the beginning research can cost you a lot of money and create a lot of possible stress later on. Those are two side effects, we could all do without.
