Propecia - Finasteride and Hair Loss

Propecia is the trade name for the drug finasteride, which was initially introduced back in 1992 by Merck & Co. Finasteride was created to help reduce enlarged prostate glands. Research had also shown the effect that 1 mg finasteride had in stopping and even reversing male pattern baldness. The drug did this by inhibiting type II 5-alpha reductase. This is the enzyme that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone or DHT. Finasteride does not inhibit Type 5 Alpha Reductase, which is also known for causing hair loss.

In 1997, finasteride was approved and marketed by the company Merck as Propecia as a hair loss treatment. The company said side effects were close to one percent of users including erectile dysfunction and a lower sex drive. A lesser percent experienced gynecomastia which is breast gland enlargement.

Propecia - finasteride - is not recommended for use by women. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not handle any of the crushed or broken pills of the drug in case as it is absorbed through the skin. This is because the drug is known to cause birth defects in unborn developing male babies.

Concerns have often been expressed about the unproven long term effect of the current one milligram Propecia. This is because DHT plays a role is many aspects of the body. This means everything from the testicles and the prostate to the central nervous system. It is unknown what effect in creating artificially lower levels of DHT could have over long periods of time.

A five year clinical study on Male Pattern Hair Loss revealed 48% of men who used the drug had either regrowth of hair or no further hair loss. This is verses 25% of men who took a sugar pill or placebo. The study said two out three men regrew hair. All of the men in the study who were not taking the male hair loss treatment lost hair.

Merck says that you may need to take Propecia daily for three months before seeing any benefit for hair loss. If you have not seen any benefits within 12 months, chances are Propecia will not work for you. You will also likely lose any hair you’ve regrown or maintained within 12 months, if you stop taking Propecia.
